The Mont Eevanon Shakers report a new Digestive Cordial made from matfoins pigats to aid digestion and indigestion. They claim rapid relief, improved vigor, and weight gain as food is digested before fermentation. A twenty five cent bottle is offered with a full puzzle book sample.
New York May 7 interior of the Merchants Refrigeration Co cold storage warehouse at 159 to 13 Chambers Street running to Reade Street was nearly destroyed by fire. Loss likely over 500000. Three alarms summoned 15 engines and 59 firemen who entered the basement and were overcome by ammonia fumes and smoke. Fireman J Encinhardt died after being rescued along with others, both Rheinhardt and rescuers hospitalized. Fire spread to 463 Chambers Street and to a paint shop at 178 Essex Street where an unknown man perished. Several firms on Reade Street will suffer water damage.
Washington May 7. JV J Calhoun of Illinois chosen by the president to act as the U S special representative in the Ruiz case will leave for Havana tomorrow if Judge Day arrives in time with the needed information. Addicks and Delaware friends sought recognition in patronage distribution and were assured they would not be ignored. Dispensary officials in Columbia were arrested after a trunk seizure. Scruggs is charged with taking cigars and peaches, and Gaston took cigars oranges and shoes. Scruggs dismissed.
Forest fires flare anew in eastern Kentucky and neighboring West Virginia destroying four farm houses on the Virginia side before containment. A church in eastern Kentucky county losses its building. A mountain man died while battling the blaze with a flail.

An early evening bicycle crash on West Patrick Street near Mr W S Netditz’s residence caused Mr Edward Miller to be thrown thirty feet after the axle fork failed. He suffered a scalp wound, chin cut, and scratches, was carried semi conscious to a home for treatment, and showed improvement the next morning.

United States Expressman Henry Haller delivered a barrel of fish to John Grove yesterday. Inside were two specimens not seen before in the area. The fish measured about six inches, had a yellow perch like back, a white belly, two rows of teeth, and ear-shaped formations behind the front fins.

A rowboat carrying six men heading to a mud digging job at Philadelphia's Schuylkill River mouth was struck by a towing tug. The boat broke apart and two men were thrown overboard and drowned, identified as Thomas Murray of Bridgeton New Jersey and Thomas Johnson, a Black resident of Woodbury New Jersey. The remaining four men were rescued.
London dispatches report Pharsalos fallen to Turkish forces after a daylong engagement amid mounting Turkish numbers. Edhem Pasha's troops seized the town while Greek regiments withdrew to Domokos. A collective note will urge a ceasefire as major powers seek a final settlement.
Nashville May 7 Professor Arthur Barnard of Nashville directed his self built airship at the Tennessee centennial exposition grounds. The 45 by 20 foot craft rose smoothly, gained windward height, circled, and descended safely near Nashville after a gust damaged a span and a gas loss occurred. Barnard plans continued use of the craft despite imperfect control.
Frankfort May 7 The senate prison investigating committee heard testimony on inhuman prison brutality including flogging and a hanging incident. John Doe, a two year convict released Wednesday, named cases with dates and details and implicated officials in contract and legal matters while unions clashed with non union workers in Chicago resulting in injuries and a near riot.
Steve Gore and Frank Baum faced trial before Judge Savidse in Sunbury on May 7 for the murder of Tuefel Gurskie on January 16. Gurskie was struck with a deer bottle and stabbed, with death occurring the next day. Co-defendants and witnesses for the Commonwealth were noted. others were arrested.
In Wilkes-Barre Pa on May 1 testimony before the legislative committee on water congestion reveals miners earning low wages with three men doing two jobs. Witnesses from Susquehanna Coal report wages from 50 cents to 317 per day for various roles, with many families living on little after rent. Superintendent George Morgan cites labor influx from Polish and Hungarian workers, soft coal competition, and a bleak future unless the labor market tightens.

William D. Howland, treasurer of Howland Mills and Hutch Spinning, was found dead in the New Bedford dock near North Street. Leading New England manufacturer, Brown University graduate, and founder of the Hotel land village, he faced undisclosed financial entanglements. Receivers now hold the affected corporations after his disappearance on April 22.
Pretoria May 7 The volksraad secretly debated response to Mr Chamberlains dispatch demanding repeal of the Transvaal alien immigrant law. It repealed the law not for London convention reasons but to avoid offending neighboring states. State attorney Bo Coster resigned in protest. Chamberlains position on the law referred to Lord Rosmead confirms Britain cannot accept the act as an ordinary police measure under Article 14 of the London convention.
The steamer Mercedes arrived from Imateca, Venezuela, with over 1,000 tons of iron ore destined for a Philadelphia firm. It marks the first shipment from a mine described as practical, located above the Orinoco mouth.
