Closing a Pentagon file does not close out hope
US Public Law 490 allows presumed death after a year and a day of missing status. Families refuse to accept the ruling, citing lost leads and conflicting evidence from POWs. Pentagon reviews show tens of thousands of statements. 45996 cases now listed as presumptive death, with a remaining small number possibly alive or unconfirmed. Geneva talks may aid recovery efforts behind enemy lines and at temporary POW graves around Korea.
