Miners Ratify Wage Pact Amid Eight Hour Day Victory
The Anthracite operators and United Mine Workers ratified their wage pact 407 to 117 at the tridistrict convention. The agreement, retroactive to March 31, raises wages, establishes an eight hour day with pay for one hour, and recognizes the union though it omits the checkoff and closed shop. New rates set minimums of 3.30 for miners per day, 2.70 for machine runners, and 2.34 for laborers, with additional increases for nine hour workers and certain hoisting engineers.
