In San Francisco on May 6 Mrs McKinley will press the electric button to launch the battleship Ohio. Simple ceremonies will precede the event with brief addresses by Fresideal McKinley Governor Nash and Irving M Scott. Mrs McKinley will sever the rope as the ax is released and Miss Helen Deshier of Columbus Ohio will break a bottle of wine over the bow naming the ship Ohio.
On May 6 health officers quarantined steerage aboard two inbound ocean liners. A Hamburg vessel with 1,122 German immigrants reported a smallpox case and over 100 passengers were moved to Hoffman Island. A Marseille steamer carrying 1,178 steerage passengers had three smallpox cases and 210 isolated. Some passengers with sore eyes were rejected.
A three story apartment fire at 931 Marquette avenue South Chicago took seven lives. Victims include Mrs Josephine Cooley and her children Mabel six and Annie 15 months, plus Peter Zook and multiple Zook family members. Fire blocked by a freight train delayed rescue. crew later arrested and released. Origin unknown. building wooden and rapidly engulfed.
