Oleo Maker Jelke Jailed in Conspiracy Case

John F. Jelke, prominent oleomargarine maker, fined $10,000 and sentenced to two years in federal prison for conspiring to defraud the government by selling colored oleomargarine without proper tax payment. Seven other defendants, tied to the John Wielke company, each fined $2,400 by Judge Leiger in the U S district court. The case centers on evading the 19 cent per pound federal tax on whitened margarine.

Olney declines appointment to federal reserve board

President Wilson had named Richard Olney as governor of the federal reserve board and offered him the position. Olney declined after consideration and sent a formal declination to the President. Warburg has accepted membership, with two other appointees likely to be named soon.

Roosevelt Injured in Manaos Canoe Accident

Dispatch from New York May 3 1954 reports Colonel Roosevelt sustained a leg injury after a canoe accident on the Dubida river near Manaos Brazil. The Roosevelt party planned to travel to Para Brazil aboard the Dunstan then proceed home by steamer. Kermit Roosevelt would sail to Madrid.

President to Attend Vera Cruz Dead in Brooklyn

Secretary Daniels announced President Wilson plans to travel to Brooklyn Monday to honor the U S sailors killed at Vera Cruz. Unknown steamer afire near Cape Race with no signs of life

A burning unknown steamship was located 300 miles south of Cape Race by the Seydlitz from Bremen to New York. The Franconia and Olympic, bound for Boston and New York respectively, offered assistance, but the burning ship could not be identified. No lifeboats or signs of life were observed aboard.
