Washington May 4 Hearings before the senate finance committee on shoe and boot manufacturers turned into a sharp attack on United Shoe Machinery company of Boston. Senators questioned whether contracts forcing customers to sign statements could violate antitrust or state laws. Witnesses from Western Shoe Manufacturers’ association across New England and Midwest said they were at the mercy of the firm, noting adverse effects on the industry amid tariff changes.

Fowler Ind May 4 Joann W Poole Benton county farmer accused by his son Emory of murdering Joseph Kemper a Gorman employee on the Poole farm last December admitted to Sheriff Shackleton and Marshal Bowman that he killed Kemper but said it was accidental Poole was arrested at a farm north of Rensselaer after two weeks on the run He told officers that while climbing a fence with a shotgun in pursuit of a rabbit the gun discharged striking Kemper in the head
President Taft will welcome farmers opposing the Canadian reciprocity measure before the Senate finance committee. Arrangements set for May 11 at the White House. He is expected to give a personal explanation of how reciprocity might affect farmers nationwide.
An autographed letter by Martin Luther to Emperor Charles V, written in 1521 during his return from the Diet of Worms, sold at auction to a Florence dealer for 25 504 dollars. The buyer is said to be J V Morgan. The letter defends Luther’s stance on the proceedings.

Columbus, May 4. The Franklin county grand jury indicted five members of the Ohio general assembly for soliciting bribes. One legislative attache was indicted for aiding and abetting in the scam. Bonds set at 5000 each. Three senators and two representatives named. Nye and Dyegle among those implicated. Burns says startling confessions may follow. County detectives monitor potential escapes as arrests loom.
The peace commissioners will meet in El Paso on May 4. Mexican commissioner Judge Francisco Carbajal has met with Francisco I. Madero and with Madero Sr. and General Navarro to confirm full authority to act.
