Atchinese Defeat Reported Amid Dutch Assaults

Amsterdam reports a Dutch column seized Tjantoe after a fierce fight with 190 Atchinese killed. Dutch losses were seven killed and 43 wounded. Russians Lose 3000 to 4000 Men in Yalu Battle

A Russia report to the emperor from General Kuropatkin dated May 4 details heavy combat on May 1 near Wiju Turenchen and Potietinsky. It notes 3000 to 4000 Russian deaths, Japanese assaults, numerous batteries, and intense shelling as Russian forces receded under pressure from Japanese troops.

Reserves could not reach the advanced force in time as our troops retreated to a rear position behind Turenchen. Japanese batteries pressed a heavy fire on the new position while turning our left flank toward Chin Gow. Lag-Fun-Hou was occupied by two battalions and a battery, enabling our advanced line to retire. The 11th and 12th Regiments suffered heavy losses, with several colonels among the fallen, and guns at Poulemetts were disabled. Up to 820 wounded, including 14 officers, have been brought in.

Berlin observers recount Hoettner a German rider executing a small loop inside a larger loop and completing two gravity defying climbs on a bicycle in public. The feat has been repeated many times in Berlin according to witnesses.

Japs Capture Newchwang and Yalu Battles Reported

London reports Japanese troops captured Newchwang after Russian forces retreated to defend the railway. Seoul notes ongoing pursuit with 19,000 Russians reported, high casualties cited. Tokyo round-up says Japanese forces inflicted heavy losses on Russians, with 798 killed or wounded and 30 officers, 300 men captured or wounded overall.

Fireships Attacked Harbor as Japanese Losses Rise

Amid noisy harbor action Russian batteries and ships repelled fireships, with one Japanese crew saved by boats. Casualties and wreckage clustered near the moats as survivors were tended aboard the Mongolia hospital ship. Grand Duke Boris arrived as crowds watched. Mrs Powell on Trial Relics of the Crime in Court

In Dover on May 1 the Powell murder trial resumed with witnesses recounting the attic confrontation with Estelle Albin. A jack knife, a catsup bottle, a beer bottle and bloodstained garments were shown as state exhibits. Three confessions by Mrs Powell were read, detailing the assault and framing of the scene, including the throat wound and staged death.

Murder Stirs Mahanoy City in Philadelphia Girl Killing

In Mahanoy City Pa May 4 the murder of 11 year old Philadelphia girl Lillian Humes at the reservoir site Monday evening remains a deep mystery. Deputy Coroner Dr George W Reese and other physicians visited the scene and questioned the family but offered little new light. A double barreled shotgun and shells were found. Humes says the guns belonged to a man and he claims no knowledge of Lathans presence in the house. He returned from work at 5 o clock to find the child dead on the kitchen floor with the top of her head missing. No lead on a bloody faced foreigner seen fleeing the scene.

FAILED TO BLOCK PORT ARTHUR

A Japanese squadron under Admiral Togo appeared off Port Arthur at dawn and engaged the forts and ships. Thirty Japanese prisoners were captured. Five torpedo boats were sighted at eight o'clock as Russian batteries and ships opened fire. A fireship was sunk near the harbor entrance, and two more Breships were sent to the bottom after 25 minutes.
