Doctors foresee looming physician glut and rising costs
A public health expert warns American medical schools must cut enrollments now to prevent a future overproduction of doctors. Dr. Donald Louria projects doctor-to-population ratios dropping from 1 per 735 in 1950 toward 1 per 250–300 by 2020, predicting intensified competition and greater testing and costs unless the balance is adjusted. AMA spokesman Frank Chappell cautions against assuming a glut and notes demand shapes supply. Louria calls for a national study to determine an ideal doctor patient ratio.
