Citizens contend proposed tax hikes and new development will raise costs, increase unemployment, and spur home foreclosures. Mayor Howald Young denies neglect while officials discuss funding, sewer and water extensions, and annexation plans affecting Frederick.
Paul Nelson Barnes of Union Bridge was arrested Friday night in Frederick County for rape and burglary linked to a June 30 1973 assault on a Frederick woman in her North Market Street apartment. He was jailed awaiting a bond hearing after being picked up in Carroll County for probation violations. The assailant cut a screen to enter the apartment and knocked the woman unconscious. Sgt. George R. Himes Jr. assisted in the case.
Officials praise a joint housing program and expect federal approval with funding for one year and potential growth in subsequent years. The plan targets substandard homes in the county and city and seeks additional Maryland Economic and Community Development funds. Parkway Church of God will present John Peterson's cantata Jesus is Coming on May 1 at 7:30 p.m. at 216 Carroll Parkway Frederick with soloists, choir, and instrumentalists including Ronald Young directing.
Howmet Corp will reduce Eastalco production by 7 percent, part of a series of cuts totaling about 72,000 tons or 15 percent of Howmet’s Eastalco and Intalco capacity. The company notes minimal personnel reductions while adjusting output at the Frederick County facility and related plants.
Frederick County has received more than 14 inches of rain since January 1 with over a third in the last ten days. The total is just over the seasonal average, and recent days brought four inches in moderate to heavy rainfall. January and spring months exceeded their averages.
Authorities announced homicide was ruled out in the death of George W H Moseley whose charred body was found near his farm along Rack Hai Road. A burned gas can and evidence linked to a fire prompted investigators to treat the case as accidental rather than foul play. Sgt Hubble is reviewing the scene as officials consider remaining possibilities.
Police report four people injured when a Frederick City cruiser responding to an officer and a vehicle eastbound stopped for a flashing light collided at North Market Street and East State Street. Pit Kane suffered facial fractures. others had minor injuries. Sutkiewicz charged with failure to stop at a flashing red light. Also notes a gospel concert by the Singing Trumpowers on May 3 at Brunswick First Church of God.
Frederick County unemployment rose to 8.4 percent in March from February's 7.4 percent. C J Nelson Shull of the state Employment Security Administration notes the county trails a statewide 7.5 percent for March. April figures pending. statewide claims fell by 1,512 to 86,847. National rate rose to 89 percent in April.
