Chamber Opposes Most New Federal Spending Proposals
Washington May 12 The United States Chamber of Commerce voted against nearly all major new spending measures before Congress. It targeted President Eisenhower’s programs for public works and low income areas, and a Democratic plan for government built atomic power plants. Delegates, numbering about 700, urged restraint on federal intervention and budget growth, with only two floor battles over aid to distressed areas and public housing. Leading figures from Providence and Chicago argued for some funding, but were outvoted as the group pushed for reduced federal outlays and spending. The resolution also opposes a multi million dollar nuclear reactor program and federal school construction loans, while backing a natural gas bill and opposing public housing subsidies. The Chicago delegation called the stance unrealistic, warning it could hinder slum clearance and urban renewal.
