One hundred miners working four miles underground emerged safely after a fire cut ventilating and lighting at Bethlehem-Fairmont Coal Co tipple near Shinnston. The blaze destroyed power lines and water pumps, with property losses pegged around 1.009 million dollars.
New York May 2 The General Electric Company says that fourth round wage increases and other benefits sought by the CIO would cause layoffs and unemployment in the electrical manufacturing industry. GE, which sets industry wage policy, called the CIO program inflationary and opposes wage cost increases. Lemuel R. Boulware GE vice president in charge of employee relations said GE will resist the union demands under current conditions. The CIO United Electrical Radio and Machine Workers of America represents about 100000 GE employees and seeks pay raises pension improvements shorter hours and other benefits valued at about 500 a year per member for 600000 industry workers. Boulware argued a cut in hours with full pay would raise costs due to lower productivity.
The FBI brings two Tennessee captured gang members to Baltimore for federal court trial on bank robberies in January and February that yielded over 34000 dollars. James Edward Bennett 23 and Carl Close 31 from Pittsburgh area face charges with Roy L. Mann 28 of Sabraton W Va and Joseph William Moran 24 tied to a separate Follansbee W Va bank holdup last month.

Russell Martin, 21, forced entry at the Zurfley home in Mineral City Ohio. He presented a blanket wrapped box and shouted a fatal threat. The homemade dynamite device exploded killing him and his estranged wife Gladys 16. Their three month old son Gary was injured and nearby witnesses Richard Zurfley 21 Peggy 18 and Gertrude Beers 38 were hurt.

The resolution urges adoption to the greatest extent practicable rather than a full bill into law of the 18 volume Hoover commission blueprint. A deed filed with the Clerk of the Court records a residence transfer along Maryland Avenue Braddock Heights from Herbert Plott and Rita Plott to Mrs. Elizabeth Eckhardt May Hood College for about 7500 dollars. Florence Dolph of Scranton died at 101 just before her 102nd birthday after a life noted for sliding down her home bannister.

Patrolman Charles A. Valenti was critically wounded by .38 caliber bullets while checking school doors in Baltimore’s Cherry Hill Negro housing development. He and partner Patrolman Anthony C. Nerkiewicz pursued leads as police found an abandoned car with ammunition and detained several suspects.

Indianapolis May 2 Gen Noyt S Vandenberg told 500 American Legion members that a 48 group Air Force can guarantee no more than prevention of early defeat and hope of eventual victory in war He cited Truman budget plans to cut strength from 59 to 48 by July 1 and said the 4A group force remains a deterrent He predicted future replacements for B 36 bombers and warned air power alone cannot win a complete victory.

The Red radio claimed major battlefield gains in the Nanking Shanghai Hangchow corridor though not confirmed by government sources. Nationalist forces hold Kunshan despite heavy Red bombardment and a reported setback near Chingyangkang.
A 76 year old farmer Jacob M Bus Ing of Route 2 Myersville was found guilty of failing to yield at a intersection after a crash on Alternate Route 40 April 20. Four Nash cars a car carrier and a 1929 Chevrolet belonging to Dusing were destroyed. Total damage over 10000. Dusing testified he saw the trailer from about two hundred yards away but thought he could cross. The carrier driven by Danny Cottrell of Lima Ohio swerved right but hit Dusing half way across. The carrier and four new cars went down a 25 foot embankment into a drainage ditch. Dusing’s car was a total loss. Bus Ing paid a minimum fine and costs totaling 6.45. Trooper Arthur M Rudy investigated. Other forfeitures included several drivers for DUI reckless driving and stop sign offenses. A 7000-ton Indian freighter Jalaketu limped to anchorage after a collision with a 10000-ton Marine Leader tanker in dense fog seven miles southwest of the Narrows. The freighter was stove in and flooded. the tanker proceeded to Stapleton, Staten Island. No distress cases were reported. Also, two bodies found with wreckage of a small plane near the Maryland Pennsylvania line were identified as W. S. Boswell and Mrs. Anna Van De Kreede, believed from Washington.
