After a year of mourning the home of the secretary of state, Mr and Mrs Hay resume entertaining in the nation’s capital. Once more they host lavish gatherings that made their house famed for generous hospitality.
United States Consul Landger was fined 7.50 marks by a Solingen court for disorderly conduct while testifying in a case involving Herr Dittmann editor of Arbeiterstimme. He briefly faced arrest, then left the court as an investigation was ordered and the sentence suspended. Also reported: Rios, self styled Pope of Luzon, captured by Governor Cailles with volunteers and likely to be tried for murder. Moros government talks underway. Misamis insurgents collapse as rebels surrender.
A massive forest fire on Chestnut Ridge near Laughlintown and Soystown, Latrobe area, burned for hours with strong winds. It destroyed logging camps and valuable lumber, forcing cross fires by farmers to protect homes. The Byers-Alien camp and nearby camps fought the blaze until morning.
King Edward arrived in Paris for a greeting by President Loubet. The royal carriage route along the Champs Elysees, Arc de Triomphe, and boulevards drew about 500000 spectators as bands played God Save the King and city lights crowned landmarks. The king and Loubet met warmly at the Elysee before attending L’Autre Danger at Theatre Francais.
Berlin May 2 The German press grows uneasy over King Edward visit to Paris and a suspected Anglo French deal. Papers warn a common front against Germany in Morocco could isolate Germany further, pushing Kaiser to seek closer ties with the United States. Dominican Refugees In Cubs. Santiago de Cuba May 2 The gunboat Presidente arrives with ex President Vasquez and many Dominican refugees detained at Guantanamo amid Cuban refusals to permit local purchase. Vasquez is ill and refugees say Dominican revolutionists remain unlikely to be resisted.
The Times-Star reports telegrams from Ohio Indiana Kentucky and West Virginia noting frosts have killed all kinds of fruit and seriously affected some crops.
In Camden New Jersey May 3 the Epworth League session heard Rev Charles W Gordon of Winnipeg discuss Christian reading of Sunday papers. Prof. Shaw condemned Sunday papers as a danger to worship, urging leaders not to rely on them for spiritual preparation. Officers elected included President Rev A DeMaris Camden and treasurer E F Fitzgeorge Trenton.
Capt Joseph Kime of Dumbshland commanded a boat named Osnal No 6 when a force gale drove it over dam No 6 on the Potomac river near Williamsport. The boat capsized, drowning the eldest child and a woman passenger, injuring Captain Kime and another daughter. Five aboard survived, with one missing, and efforts to recover the vessel and bodies continued through the night.
James E. McMahon wealthy contractor and Tammany Hall executive committee member was found dead in his New York home with fatal head wounds. Police arrested 24 year old Douvald Kennedy a prizefighter who was with McMahon hours before the murder. Kennedy drank bloodied clothing and remained silent. McMahon a brother of ex Police Justice Daniel F. McMahon had married days earlier. Separate Baltimore report: William Hughes three, his sister two, Harriet Gardner one, perished in a Lansdowne fire while parents fished nearby leaving another child rescued.
Manila Day anniversary observed in Washington with the largest flag ever flown from the east flagstaff on the war state and navy building. The 20 by 30 foot flag was displayed all day. Admiral Dewey, usually a guest for dinners on such anniversaries, could not attend this year due to inspection duty at Hampton Roads with the general board.
In Washington the Catholic church in the Philippines is praised for honesty and impartiality by Father Vatutin, who urges no fear of injustice from American hands. He says an American archbishop would boost prestige and notes strong anti-insurgent sentiment among locals toward the old Spanish clergy.
Three sheet metal workers, William Nelson Adams Charles Carman and Isador Rosenberg all Philadelphians die when a scaffold 76 feet above the tracks at the Asien Station gives way. Two others were injured. The accident involvement a 13 worker gang brought by D Lupton Sons & Co. Others escaped after clinging to the scaffold until rescue. The cause remains unknown.
