Maryland sheep and wool festival trims loss to record 1978 prices
The Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival at Carroll County Agricultural Center survived a decline to a low point in 1975 and rose to record prices in 1978 with averages of 15.60 per 100 pounds for mature sheep and 56.70 per 100 pounds for lambs. Wool averaged 75 cents per pound with total wool value at 98,000 dollars, the best since 1961. Dr. Emory Leffel notes continued uncertainty about a national turnaround and cites the Polypay breeding program as key to future gains.
