Portraits split in two parts reveal 18th century practice
London AP reports that a National Gallery portrait of Madame de Pompadour was painted in two parts. The head and arms were on a separate canvas stitched to a larger piece. Francois Hubert Drouais painted the 1763 64 portrait, Pompadour died soon after, and the massive work measures seven by five feet, bought last year from Lord Rosebery for an undisclosed sum.
