Rare blue Staffordshire plates mark B and O Railroad era exhibit
In the C Burr Artz Library a special display showcases two scarce blue Staffordshire plates made in England 137 years ago to honor the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Engraved by British artisans, one plate depicts a cable train at a coal mine entrance, the other an inclined plane. The plates, part of G Mantz Besant’s bequest, join a broader set reflecting B and O route scenes with American reproductions in dark blue.

Rose Hill Estate and Gov Johnson in Early Maryland Lore
Frederick readers explore Rose Hill near the city as a claimed home of Gov. Thomas Johnson. Historians debate its link to Richfield, noting Rose Hill’s 295 acres and a gift to Johnson’s daughter Anne Grahame, with later references to Johnson’s life and the Sedgwick family connection.
