New Income Tax Cuts In Effect Today
Washington May 1 The 4 800 000 000 a year tax cut becomes a reality for many taxpayers today. A boost in retail buying was expected as wage earners receive less money withheld from paychecks regardless of when money was captured. Those taxed today are the first of more than 50 000 000 taxpayers. The law, passed by Congress last March over President Truman's veto, dates the lower withholding tax back to the start of the year. Refunds await final 1948 returns filed in 1949. The 7 400 000 persons freed from income taxes will wait to recover money withheld January through April. Millions of other taxpayers face cuts from 12.6 percent on 400 a year to five percent on 134 000 or more. The Treasury estimates reductions cost 600 000 000 in May and June, with over 45 000 000 taxpayers sharing, and June will reach professional workers and high income groups with a quarterly payment due June 15. Amended estimates can be filed to reduce quarterly payments. Treasury officials expect many downsized estimates since tax cuts were anticipated.
