About 26 000 gasoline rationing cards have arrived for consumer registration in public schools on May 12 14. Cards include five types with units for regular motorists and essential use cards for physicians police and ambulances.
The Community Chest drive opens with a volunteer dinner at the Francis Scott Key hotel in Frederick. A. C. Stine, chairman, says 150 to 200 workers will receive instructions and sing the campaign theme "Deep in the Heart of Frederick." Cards were sent to 2,600 contributors as enthusiasm grows. A secondary note reports a Dutch merchant ship torpedoed and sunk off the Atlantic coast with survivors landed at an east coast port.
Frederick county will run a war bond pledge campaign at city and county elementary schools during sugar registration hours, from 2 to 9 p m, Monday through Thursday. The effort aims to avoid house to house canvassing due to rationing and possible gasoline limits.
Moscow radio reported that in April German forces on the Lenin grad front lost over 58,090 officers and men, killed and wounded. The casualty figure reflects intense fighting on that front during the month.

British troops guarding the right flank of the Allied line in Burma withdrew 80 miles to a triangle of Mandalay Kyaukse and Myingyan after a Japanese advance to Lashio. The bulk of forces protects Mandalay approaches with tanks and a Gurkha brigade claiming a heavy cost in the clash.
News and Post to increase price starting May 18 affects Frederick newspapers with new rates set for single copy three cents and monthly options. The change, first in about 25 years, places Frederick papers among Maryland dailies raising costs while Martinsburg Journal also adjusts prices.
