Cast iron guardians of Frederick porches tell quiet history

Frederick residents long admire iron dogs and lions on homes in Court Square area. The greyhound on the Episcopal rectory steps, Newfoundland on the Williams house, and other figures are linked to early 19th century English and German influences, likely cast in Baltimore. Legends tie the Spite House to Dr. John Tyler and local lore, while more pieces such as the deer of Col. Trail and the two colonial setters show a broader metal-relief tradition fading after 1910.
