Program Open Space topic urged swift county action
Offutt Johnson of Maryland's Department of Natural Resources told Frederick Rotarians there is a slight crisis as Frederick County has unused Program Open Space funds. The county has $963,604 allotted since 1969 but only $103,861 in project approvals, prompting concern other counties may seek unobligated money. He urged hiring a full time Parks and Recreation director to evaluate sites, apply for funds, and manage the commission. He praised Commissioner Donald L. Lewis for park planning efforts and urged making parks accessible to towns, promoting active outdoor activities, multi use facilities, and better use of school sites for recreation. He also highlighted nature trails and arboreal programs for seniors and the handicapped.
