Traffic Control For Bay Plan To Meet In April
A Portsmouth committee will meet April 5 to review a Coast Guard traffic plan for lower Chesapeake Bay and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. The plan would ban unmanned vessel anchorage in the southern bay, require anchored drops for manned ships, enforce safe towing lines for unmanned craft, limit shallow draft vessels to 10 knots, and set a marine traffic and radio control system for emergency use. Captain Emerson Hayes Jr. said the plan follows Coast Guard reviews of bridge-tunnel accidents and possible causes after five incidents since 1972 that damaged the $200 million facility and kept it closed for weeks.
