Fires and arrest in Mount Pleasant case linked to Filby stable blaze
A man named Maurios L. Bennett, about 80, was arrested at Mr. John Etzler’s farm near Mount Pleasant on a charge connected to the burning of John Filby’s stable Friday morning. Sheriff Lease and Deputy Carter made the arrest on a deputy Carter sworn warrant. Bennett claimed knowledge of the fire’s origin, suggesting drunken African Americans may have been involved. He was sent to jail by Justice Smith awaiting further hearing. The report also notes an ecclesiastical consecration invitation from Hankow and several real estate transactions in the area.
