Frederick County Career and Technology Center leader Earl Miller opened the day with a center overview and a Power Point presentation while 26 parents and professionals spoke with New Market Middle School students about varied rotations and career options.
New Market students heard from workers and teachers about diverse paths to success. Attendees like Heather Luke Courtney Ginsburg and Kate Hanten praised Career Day as eye opening and motivating, while Dylane Fink appreciated speakers sharing real work experiences. Melanie Laffer organized the event and thanked volunteers for their time.
A Maryland petition drive by a nonprofit linked to the Boy Scouts travels through Frederick with a call for signers. Public Advocate of the United States argues Montgomery County unfairly charges Scouts for using public facilities, citing taxpayer funded venues and moral criteria. Signature collection is planned at Applebee’s in Annapolis and Dunkin’ in Baltimore on Thursday.
Annapolis approves a 150000 grant for Hill Street Park in Frederick next to Billcrest Elementary. The $3.1 million project will include a pool, two skateboard facilities, basketball courts and a lighted multi field. Mayor Jennifer Dougherty says most of the park opens within a year, bonds will fund the pool, and county officials will assist. The same meeting funds relocate fiber optic lines for MARC trains. Frederick Community College must return 46453.02 from a Science and Technology Hall project.
Omari Patterson of Frederick, an undergraduate at Northeastern University, has been named to the 2002 Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
Frederick County Public Schools will close for summer on June 7 if no emergency days are invoked. Teachers’ last workday is June 10. Four emergency days were unused. Next year the last day for students is planned for June 17, 2003 and classes resume August 26, 2002.
