Frederick County school board keeps some downtown offices

The Frederick County school board voted 4-3 to retain some top offices at 115 E. Church St while moving other headquarters to Hayward Road. County commissioners delayed a decision on buying two Hayward Road properties, including the Plantronics building for 3.6 million, to allow city and board compromise. The plan faces opposition from city officials and some board members, with ongoing debate over relocating nearly 150 downtown employees.

Soviet troops seize 23 Lithuanian deserters in hospital raids

Soviet soldiers stormed two hospitals in Vilnius and detained at least 23 Lithuanian army deserters leaving a blood trail on the steps. Hero Boy Saves Day with 911 in Rockville

Six year old Matthew Scott saved his mother by calling 911 after she collapsed on February 26. He calmly instructed his siblings, waited for the ambulance, and alerted his father. County officials honored him with a red firefighter hat and a proclamation.

Cold snap threatens Western Maryland apple crop

An orchardist fought a freezing night as temperatures dipped to 23 degrees at Catoctin Mountain Orchard. Owner Robert Black woke at 3 a.m. to a frost alarm set for 28 degrees and activated a wind machine to lift the chill. He noted buds were still tight and could endure more than blossoms.

Sheppard Pratt Health System proposes a 204 acre project near Jefferson to open a residential treatment center for up to 59 youths and a 96 student school on land at Std 484 and Holine Road.
