USDA asks Arkansas schools stop using meat amid contamination fears
U S Agriculture Department officials urged Arkansas schools to halt use of about 2 100 cases of ground meat until certified free of contamination by the banned pesticide heptachlor. Six of about 100 meat samples tested showed contamination from meat produced by several processors and farms in Arkansas and nearby states. Officials say there is no widespread meat supply problem, while milk testing kits are distributed to nursing mothers in northwest Arkansas.

Writing test requirement waived for 68 Baltimore grads
The Maryland Board of Education waived the mandatory writing test for 68 students who needed it to graduate this year. The test drew controversy over grading methods as some high achieving students failed to pass. Superintendent David W. Hornbeck said a special report on the test may prompt changes in timing and structure, but not in time for June graduates. He noted a General Assembly bill to delay the test for two years and argued withholding graduation would be unfair for this small group.
