County farmers seek exit from ag preservation districts

Frederick County Commissioners approved withdrawals from agricultural preservation districts for two farm operations facing financial hardship. Wilmer and Ruth Keller seek 71.5 acres near Picnic Woods and Bicie roads, while Clarence and Pauline Harshman target 330 acres by Brethren Church Road near I-70. In Washington, Democrats draft a 1984 platform focused on contrasts with the Reagan administration rather than candidate disputes. Boston researchers estimate a heavy smoker aged 35 to 44 who smokes over two packs daily costs society about 58987 in lifetime medical bills and lost wages. Women in the same group incur 20152, due to lower projected earnings. A higher cigarette tax could shift paying these costs onto smokers, the study says.
