Senate rejects fund diversion for state pay raises

Annapolis March 26 Democratic lawmakers rejected Governor McKeldin’s plan to divert road funds to State Police expenses to finance state employee pay raises. The bill would shift maintenance costs from general funds, freeing 1.768 million yet harming roads budgets. Democrats urged funding without tax increases and noted the plan would cripple road programs statewide. The session ran late with little floor action beyond defeating a bill to redraw legislative districts and postponing a truck mile tax debate.
