The Frederick county farmer reports March snow helped young wheat recover from February freezes, with roots set and fresh blades emerging. Gardens will be late, with little spring plowing done, and potato planting delayed as ground remains too wet to work. Fruit prospects stay cautious as frosts threaten peach buds and fodder quality fell after last summer floods.

Washington dispatch notes Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes relies on Assistant Secretary Oscar Chapman to manage a wide federal portfolio. Chapman, once a Denver juvenile court official, led Supreme campaigns and now advocates a Virgin Islands rehabilitation project funded by a public works bond. The piece also mentions union tensions and a playful tale of low-cost travel aided by poker wins.

Frank L. Bentz formerly of Frederick and secretary for 15 years of the Hagerstown Imsak Walton League Chapter was chosen president at the annual meeting and dinner held at the State Armory. Alfred Nobel, donor of the peace prize, manifested dynamite and other high explosives.
Marie Ball a 16 year old in Bel Air Maryland faced a perjury trial in Harford County Court after the absence of two key state witnesses interrupted the proceedings. The state alleges she invented a kidnapping tale to avoid punishment claiming she was abducted by Deputy Sheriff Walter Bennington while two men George Sman and Ross Jones were later identified as abductors. Ball is the sister of several steeplechase jockeys and pleaded not guilty seeking a trial start.
President Roosevelt plans a mixed work and pleasure fishing trip as he departs by train for Jacksonville. Aboard Vincent Amor’s yacht Nourmtal, aides and officials including Hugh S. Johnson may join for the cruise toward Southern waters lasting about a week.
A portrait of a mother will be reproduced on Mothers Day stamps to go on sale in Washington Mall and other post offices the next day. Officials say a final color scheme for the 260,000,980 two cent stamps has not yet been decided.
New York March 27 Stocks fell sharply after the president urged Congress to pass an exchange control bill with teeth. The ticker lagged as leaders slipped one to three points before a partial rally. Commodities tumbled wheat, cotton declined, silver and rubber eased while bonds remained firm. Sterling opened higher and money markets steadied. Ex Stroud, 38, colored, charged with theft after a Brunswick robbery is reported as being turned over to authorities by Hagerstown officers.
Representative Alfred L. Buswinkle of North Carolina presses inquiry into a sweeping investigation of President Roosevelt's brain trust. The move follows charges by Dr William A. Wirt of Gary Indiana that the brain trust plotted to establish a communist government sum of control.
In Kansas City a heated municipal election saw violence between the Democratic organization and the Citizens-Fusion ticket. William Findley, a Black election worker, was killed by a bullet at a polling place likely aimed at a Republican judge. Douglas Gregg, a Democrat, was badly beaten, while reporter Justin Bowersock reported being slugged as gunfire erupted near a First District polling site.
President Roosevelt prepared a veto message for Congress explaining why he would not approve the wartime veterans and government employee pay increases. The White House intended to send the veto to Capitol Hill mid afternoon, marking his first refusal to sign a major spending bill. House and Senate leaders planned to attempt an override vote the next day on the independent offices supply bill containing the veterans and pay provisions.
