Helped Save Maryland The Old Guard of Frederick
The Washington Post notes a faded American flag carried by Francis T. Hopwood at the inaugural parade. The flag, made by Frederick ladies, was given to the Home Guard who defended Frederick during Civil War actions and secession debates. The group arrested some legislators to keep secrets. The flag symbolized loyalty to the Union amid Confederate threats.
