Farm bill reconsiders downers in cattle market
Washington AP reports a proposed farm bill tweak could lift the ban on selling sick or injured cattle known as downers, prompting dairy groups and animal advocates to clash. The Agriculture Department counts about 30,000 downers sent to slaughter annually, mostly dairy cows, with some buyers like McDonalds avoiding such meat. The debate centers on health testing, humane euthanizing, and potential mad cow disease concerns, with industry groups and humane societies trading positions.
