Stockpiles Increasing Under Senate Probe
Washington apprises that the strategic materials stockpile may grow by 229 million in largely unnecessary items. A Senate subcommittee led by Sen. Symington investigates 35 contracts, with deliveries in Q1 costing taxpayers about 8.5 million above current market prices. President Kennedy notes possible unconscionable profits and halts new acquisitions except for three critically short items.

Surplus Cuts and Material Stocks in Government Stance
Government actions cut purchases of items such as feathers and castor oil while stockpiles grow. Officials cited prior contracts and a broad surplus in defense materials, with aluminum tonnage rising as stockpiles reached 169 percent of requirements. A separate report notes a Soviet Pravda item about a U.S. Communist leader offered eye donation, and a warning on costly Cuba invasion risk. The New Delhi note projects India’s population to near 900 million by century's end without birth control.
