Wisconsin researchers report ultraviolet light exposure on mold spores yields a new penicillin strain Qi76. Two UW Botany staff members Myron Backus and John Stauffer developed lines from X-1612, exposing spores to UV rays, producing Qi76 with units ranging from 761 to 904 per cubic centimeter. The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation notes no patent on Qi76 and many drug makers already use it, with supplies sent to England France and China.
