Debate Over Two Tax Plans Divides Congress on March 25
Washington debate raged over two tax plans as supporters praised a pay as you go approach while opponents decried abatement. Rep Doughteun led criticisms of the Ruml plan, while Rep Carlson urged a plan to spur war bond purchases and a pay as you earn system. Maryland potato dealer restrained from selling seed potatoes for food
The State Office of Price Administration announced a federal court restraint on R. R. Schley of Baltimore from selling seed potatoes for public consumption or any potatoes beyond ceiling prices. OPA enforcement chief Cornelius P. Mundy said Schley previously sold thousands of pounds of seed potatoes for consumption, not planting. The rule requires buyers to provide a written statement that seed potatoes are for planting or resale as seed and not for human consumption. Mundy noted the ceiling for seed potatoes is higher than for table potatoes and Schley sold both types beyond limits and sometimes failed to supply written statements.
