Frederick County hosts its 15th annual Science and Engineering Fair with entries from kindergartners to high schoolers. Philip Roessler, a Middletown junior, won the high school top prize for studying atrazine effects on earthworm reproduction and will represent the district at the International Science Fair in Tucson in May. He credit his biology teacher Ron Albaugh and noted atrazine reduces earthworm cocoon production.

Area breeder's dogs help fill police ranks on East Coast
Woodsboro breeder Jan Coffman watched her 11 week old black and tan bloodhound depart for a career in law enforcement as Cecil County Deputy Cortley Carter Jr. traveled two hours from northeast Maryland to meet his future partner. The pup is one of seven from a litter sired by Gentleman Jack and The Honeys Honeybee. Coffman noted many of her bloodhounds pursue police work, with prices ranging from 400 for untrained to 2500 to 5000 for fully trained dogs.

Bourland to Step Down After 20 Years as Walkersville Burgess
Orley R. Bourland Jr. announced he will not seek a 11th term as Walkersville burgess citing personal reasons. With only one candidate initially named for the May 6 election and others entering later, the race now features competition in both burgess and commissioner areas.
