Tax cut debate begins as Reagan plan offered
The House Ways and Means Committee opened hearings on President Reagan's Economic Recovery Tax Act HR 2400 and S 683. The package would cut individual rates by 5 then 10 and 4 percent, total $250 billion for individuals and over $60 billion for business, with depreciation rewrites and incentives to spur investment, savings and job creation. The Chamber says the plan would shift tax rates to 10 to 50 percent and boost economic growth while some liberals push for more redistribution. Maryland residents are urged to support the act.

Social programs prove effective and vital across the nation
Vernon E Jordan Jr argues federal social programs work and must be defended. He cites food stamps Head Start Job Corps and Medicare as success stories showing reductions in hunger and improved schooling while noting benefits extend to white beneficiaries and criticizing claims of racial bias or budgetary doom. He views these programs as investments in America’s human capital.
