Maryland Senate advances censorship bills amid debate
The Maryland State Senate approved two censorship measures on age restricted film showings. One bill targets operators showing films deemed obscene to minors, with amendments narrowing the age range for Baltimore City. Senators also backed a plan to empower state censors to label films unfit for minors amid constitutional questions and prior House rejection of a broader statewide version. The session also heard about a supplemental budget plan increasing tax revenues by 4.59 million and borrowing 672,850 for capital needs, plus proposed reforms to welfare, courts, and teacher funding.
