Tawes Plans Smaller Meals Tax to Boost Budget
Annapolis Gov. Tawes said a $1 million budget cut from legislative finance will be used to raise the base of his restaurant meals tax. The tax originally starts at 25 cents, with talk of increasing the base if possible, but not above $1. His $519 million budget faces changes as requests trim the anticipated surplus from about $6 million to roughly $4 million. A $2.5 million welfare aid provision in the supplemental budget accounts for higher costs, while a reserve of $2 million and last year’s carryover bring the next budget’s potential to nearly $17 million.
