The Office of Price Administration fixes caviar at seven points per pound under new rationing starting Monday, equal to salmon. A Washington grocer confirms prices, with one-ounce jars at 83 cents and a four-ounce jar at 3.15 dollars, suggesting a pound would cost about 12 dollars. Coal stoves will be available for supplementary heating after March 30, OPA announces.
The Frederick County delegation introduced a House bill to create a retirement program for drivers of four local volunteer fire companies modeled on the police pension. Axis counter attacks in North Africa push back Montgomery’s Mareth Line bridgehead as Rommel’s forces strike south of Gabes. Allied forces under Patton and British Eighth Army counter, with over 2,000 Axis prisoners taken and ongoing fighting near Mareth village El Guetar El Hamma and Gabes.
Ninth United States Air Force Liberator bombers attacked Messina harbor in daylight raid. The Italian high command said 30 bombers were involved. 10 people were killed and 32 injured with extensive building damage.
