Washington March 24 Secretary Root announced no action would be taken on Estes Rathbone charges against Brigadier General Wood. The secretary endorsed that Wood acted with War Department approval as military governor and that the gift involved in a Cuban gesture, not official action, bears no connection to Wood’s duties. There is no foundation for the charges. Also reported is a possible appointment of E Clark of Cedar Rapids as assistant secretary of the department of commerce and labor, a choice seen as favorable to labor interests.
The town of Surigao in Mindanao was captured by ladrones on Sunday. Constabulary Inspector Clarke and several others were killed. A detachment of thirty from the Tenth Infantry, led by Lieutenants Patterson and Giewn, sails from Iligan to recapture. General Sumner orders two more companies to Surigao. Governor Taft and General Davis plan a conference with Jolo’s Sultan to avert further trouble. The Proteus burial ship has arrived with 500 soldier bodies and a few civilians.
March 24 dispatches report revoltionists in full control of San Domingo, seizing the cable office and government lines. Foreign Minister Sanchez seeks asylum in the U.S. consulate. Gen Pena and Assistant Governor Echenique reportedly killed. Wes Gil assumes rebel command as both sides suffer unknown casualties and warnings of serious consequences.
Volcanic activity on Saint Vincent intensifies with cannonading and increased ejecta. Northern districts suffer heavy stone and black sand falls amid storm winds driving ash clouds north. Inhabitants migrate south as darkness and red dust spread over Barbados and nearby islands. Earth tremors persist as detonation sounds echo from Dominica to Bridgetown.
New York March 24. It is learned from high authority that anthracite wholesale prices will drop on April 1 to 4.54 dollars per ton at tidewater. On May 1 the price will be advanced 1½ cents a ton, then each month rise 10 cents until 5 dollars a ton is reached. The 5 dollar level will be maintained barring exceptional developments until April 1, 1904.
London officials announce that Florence Maybrick the American convicted of poisoning her husband James Maybrick in 1889 will be released in 1904. The Home Office cites new leverage for delaying lawsuits over her land interests in Kentucky Virginia and West Virginia as reason for the action. Authorities credit efforts on this side of the Atlantic and note Ambassador Herbert has not been involved.
A gas explosion at the Athens Coal Company mine in Athens Windis Springfield H March 24 killed six miners and seriously injured another. The dead are John Rogers Fred Smpke Corndorf James Patrick August Nori and David Myers. An entry had been blocked by gas and reopening caused the blast as a miner fired into the stopped chamber. Carl Joerinich was badly hurt. Nine men were in the mine at the time. some victims were about 100 feet from the blast site.
Hamilton Fish becomes assistant United States treasurer and reappoints George W. Marlow as deputy assistant treasurer and cashier and Ward W. Hiale as assistant cashier. Two money counters accompany him to handle the $294,106,040 in cash and securities, a process expected to take two months.
Mrs. Altherl Burdick, widow of Edwin J. Burdick, testified under cross examination about her long affair with Arthur R. Pennell from 1898 to 1901. District Attorney Coatsworth forced details from letters and recollections, including a New Haven meeting and a kiss in a doorway, as she recounted how Burdick forgave her and took her back for the children before the 1901 divorce plans. The hearing covered earlier letters, Atlantic City notes, and Burdick’s eventual decision to send her away, with the second exile beginning last Thanksgiving before his murder on February 26.
The Senate in Trenton after adjournment last night agreed to host a dinner in honor of Governor Murphy on Thursday of the new week. In New York, plans call for a joint session to approve the measure by Thursday morning, April.
