Urbana Fire Engine Inspected For Standards Compliance
The Frederick County Volunteer Firemen's Association standards committee will inspect Urbana's fire engine tonight to determine if it meets local requirements. Urbana Volunteer Fire Company seeks certification from Maryland and state fire associations, hoping for active service after February’s acquisition of a 1972 Ford F730 chassis built by LaFrance with 750 gpm pump, 300 gal tank, and 80 gal foam. A meeting at 7 30 p m on March 31 at Independent Hose Company will decide Urbana’s membership bid, with the annual convention set for Aug 4 in Jefferson and parade Aug 11. Further convention details will follow from President Merrii D Remsberg Company, second vice president of the Maryland State Firemen's Association. The convention election occurs in Ocean City in June. Grimes Truck Center will donate a trailer to the fire prevention committee. Next meeting is May 20 at United Fire Company. A proposed constitutional bylaw change would raise dues from 6 to 10. A nominating committee appointed includes Charles Mumma, Sam Lenhart, Lester Baker. County association backs Oscar Baker of Independent Hose.

Zoning proposal may alter farm options in Frederick County
Frederick County Farm Bureau members met at Liberrytown Fire Hall to hear James R. Shaw explain a new zoning plan called very low residential density control. It would allow one dwelling unit per 25 to 50 acres in agricultural zones, potentially valuing land only as agricultural, limiting prime land sales, and shifting development costs to services. Local officials urged attendance and feedback as farmers weighed potential loss of current rights amid growing outlying developments.
