Negro Given Suspended Sentence For Assault
A 24 year old man was found guilty of technical assault and battery on a waite girl and received a six month suspended sentence to the House of Correction from Justice Emmett R. Bowlus in Po Nee Court Tuesday night. The charged assault was by Harry Hill upon Stella Staub both employed in a local restaurant. The court heard officers testify the girl had complained of the actions, Hill denied the charges. The judge said the prosecution failed to show a serious offense. State's Attorney Sherman Bowers prosecuted. EF. Austin James represented Hill. Police Court was cleared of spectators before the case was tied. Stephen Hughs and William Friggell of New York City were found guilty of vagrancy in the same session and sentenced to three months in the House of Correction. Arrests were by Lieut. Charles Blumenauer and Allen Bartgts. A colored man received a suspended fine for discharging firearms in the city limits after shooting at a vicious dog that attacked him. Officer Benjamin Phebus filed the charge. Dr. Joan P. Umbach of Hood College pled guilty to speeding over 45 mph and was fined 10 dollars and costs. arrest by J. A. West. Umbach’s speed was 70 mph on the Washington road south of Frederick. John Z. Jackson of Washington, D. C., forfeited 10 dollars collateral for nonappearance on a charge of operating without license plates.
