Western Trainmen Get Pay Increases Across Railroads
The federal arbitration board awarded wage hikes for rail yard workers led by switchmen and switch tenders, retroactive to February 10, 1919, covering multiple lines including Chicago & Eastern Illinois and Lake Shore & Michigan Southern. The 2 cent hourly raise for switchmen and $32 monthly for switch tenders were justified by rising operating costs over the prior four years.
