Space shuttle Columbia aborts liftoff seconds from launch
Space shuttle Columbia engines shut down just three seconds before liftoff on a seven person research mission. NASA reported the three auxiliary power units were off and the engine shutdown occurred automatically. The crew of five Americans and two Germans were unharmed as launch was halted on the Cape Canaveral pad. The team secured the shuttle and NASA awaited a reschedule while noting past similar incidents in 1984 and 1985. The German portion of the mission involved a Munich control center with NASA Houston handling flight operations.
