Purple fringed orchid protected in Maryland through voluntary registry
A mossy hillside near Five Forks Road houses Maryland’s purple fringed orchid, one of the state’s rarest flowers. The Nature Conservancy and local authorities add this marshy Catoctin Mountain patch to the Natural Areas Registry, preserving it via a verbal, nonbinding conservation pledge from the landowner.
