MAIF faces $30 million deficit eyed by Mandel bill option
Industry and MAIF chief John Corbley say MAIF could break even monthly by late fall under Mandel bill. Premium tax hike or industry taxes would pass costs to drivers, including non MAIF insured, via per car charges and surcharges. Debate centers on who can insure poorer motorists most cheaply with state or private efforts. Mandel's plan would leave the state $626,000 ahead annually if MAIF is tax exempt.

Driver personality linked to fatal Baltimore accidents
A Baltimore based National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study found that fatal highway crashes often involve outgoing impulsive belligerent drivers. Most at risk are men 25 to 35 who drink heavily, are single or divorced, and drive old cars. Early morning or weekend crashes are common. The three year project covered nearly 300 fatal Baltimore Beltway accidents.
