Afternoon tea in England and its long history
The piece traces tea’s rise from a luxury taxed import to a staple of British life. It covers its first ad campaigns, Catherine of Braganza’s dowry, the shift from coffee culture, rising imports, and the rise of tea gardens and tea shops in London. It notes 17.8 million pounds imported by the late 1700s and the pivotal India China trade dynamic.
