National Wildlife Week Opens With Ocean Focus
National Wildlife Week marks its 44th year and for the first time highlights oceans and their resources. The National Wildlife Federation notes oceans provide about 10 percent of world protein, 60 million tons harvested annually, and oxygen via marine phytoplankton, while deploring decades of waste dumping and pollution harming coastal waters. The EPA has ordered a halt to sewage sludge and industrial waste dumping in U S coastal Atlantic waters, with a final deadline of December 31, 1981.
