Curran Attacks Taft Hartley Act in Congress

Joseph Curran, president of the CIO Maritime Union, warned that the Taft Hartley Act opens the door for subversives and criminals to man merchant ships. He criticized the law for hindering union hiring halls and urged continued reform to prevent favoritism, noting court rulings deem hiring hall practices illegal if they favor union members. The discussion occurred before the House Labor Committee, with Curran linking past conflicts with the waterfront and Longshoremen’s Union to current labor provisions.

Maryland License Plate Letters Significance Debated

Maryland moved to new orange on black license plates with letter codes indicating counties of sale. The system assigns DA through FJ to northern and central counties and AA through CJ to Baltimore city, with some counties selling plates directly via the state. Police warn the change may complicate quick plate checks and require following vehicles to read numbers.
