Frederick County OKs 273000 Rise for New Design Road Project
Frederick County Commissioners vote to boost the New Design Road contract by 273000 to a total of 7.6 million. They also deny a request by County Commissioner Hogan and her husband for a median break at 5614 New Design Road, with Hogan abstaining. The changes include 14 change orders raising project costs to 455000 above the original 7.2 million award. The design contract rose from 413000 to 515000, funded largely by developers and state funds with some federal Old Frederick Road Bridge leftovers. The Hogans plan a 144 unit retirement community on their 10 acre site.

Buckeystown sewer plan moves edge of village
Buckeystown residents will vote on an $82 million wastewater line that would loop around the village edge to connect a greatly expanded plant. The project would threefold the capacity of the current facility and redirect treated effluent beyond the Monocacy to the Potomac, replacing an earlier plan to run a four foot line along Buckeystown Pike.

Mount Airy seeks cross county support for new high school
Mount Airy parents urged Freder ick and Carroll school boards to consider a new high school, arguing current students attend South Carroll Singanore and Urbana high schools and that 1 200 students is the optimal size. Organizers cited 933 at two local elementary schools and projected 1 137 students from future housing. Dr Yale Stenzler said figures need more study as neighboring counties share a high school.

Community Action Committee leaders spoke at City Hall urging construction of a pedestrian overpass on West Patrick Street over the Golden Mile to improve safety after multiple auto incidents left a child dead and a man injured. They pressed City officials to push SHA for action.

Soldier's name added to Korean Veterans monument
Private First Class Irvin E. Lanehart a 24 year old GI killed in Korea on June 12 1952 has been named on Frederick County's Korean Veterans Monument in Memorial Park. R S Kinnaird Monuments of Thurmont completed the inscription under Korean Memorial Committee president Charles Wisner. Lanehart rests in Mount Olivet Cemetery with a VA issued footstone to be placed later. A March 27 dedication is planned rain or shine with three Riggles family grandchildren unveiling. Lanehart born in Rick lived in Shepherdstown and Frederick area before enlisting in Greensboro NC in 1951. He trained at Jackson SC and deployed to Korea arriving May 1952 near Karhyon ni North Korea where he was killed defending a hill with Co G 180th Infantry Division 45th Division.

Ferguson withdraws handgun rights bill in Maryland
Senator Timothy Ferguson of Frederick County pulled his long debated bill to create a right to carry concealed handguns in Maryland. The measure would drop the good and substantial reason requirement and allow any adult with clean record who completes a safety course to obtain a permit. Ferguson and five co sponsors sit on the Judicial Proceedings Committee, a bloc able to move the bill from committee. He indicated he may try again later, despite previous withdrawals to avoid floor amendments.
