Assembly bill could cost Frederick County aid

Frederick County faces a potential $1 million cut in state aid under a General Assembly bill slicing $22 million from local jurisdictions. The Appropriations Committee reviews the budget, hitting schools and police, with Frederick schools projecting a net loss of about $586,000 next year and reduced local control over spending. County officials express frustration, noting prior state cuts and planned Social Security costs for teachers. The impact includes losses in APEX funds, transportation, kindergarten, and dropout programs, with shifts to ESOL funding and a modest attendance-based bonus. Net local school losses total about $645,000 while police aid decreases $344,000 and open space funding falls by $45,000.
