End Of An Era Gaithersburg Firemen To Burn Down Old School
The Gaithersburg Volunteer Fire Company will stage an arson act April 25 at 9 a.m. to burn the Washington Grove Elementary School, deemed obsolete by the Board of Education, as a contrast to the nearby modern Walter Grove Elementary building. Historic notes recall 1885 origin and 1895 public school use with a wood stove, outside plumbing, and a hand dipper water bucket, with alumni such as William Pace and Henry Becraft recalling earlier classrooms and coal stoves.

Former students recall woodcrafts and homemade balls, Friday spelling bees, and multi sided blackboard math at the old school closed in 1956. The building became storage then a clothing center, as Principal Powell unveils a Bible from 1923 inscribed with Romans.
